Swanage First School was opened in 1897 at Mount Scar to serve the children of Swanage town. We have log books dating back to 1893, before the official opening - mostly they are records of attendance but there are some interesting notes that show just how times have changed!

Attendance very low in the morning ... Reason - an alert in the night 1.30-3am when incendiaries & anti-personnel bombs were dropped on the town. Police called during the day to ask that the children be warned against picking up any strange objects.
